YOUR SILENT NEIGHBORS, Palmire Bachand, Nurse
by David K. Leff
Town Poet Laureate and Deputy Town Historian

A daughter of French-Canadian immigrants, Palmire Bachand (1889-1918) was born and grew up in Collinsville where she attended grammar and high school. She graduated from the Winsted Business School and the Hartford Hospital Training School.  Bachland was a member of the Nurses Register of Hartford.

Tending to a patient in Thompsonville, Connecticut during the influenza pandemic of 1918, she caught the flu and died of pneumonia within a week.  Her mother had died in 1914, her father in 1917, but she was survived by three brothers and two sisters.

The funeral was held at St. Patrick’s church where a requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. William P. Kennedy.  “Face to Face with Christ, My Savior” was sung by Miss. Stella Lefevre, and there were many floral tributes.

Palmire Bachand is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Collinsville.
