YOUR SILENT NEIGHBORS, Peter J. Myers, Collins Company Workman
by David K. Leff
Town Poet Laureate and Deputy Town Historian

A Collinsville native, Peter J. Myers (1870-1937) worked for the Collins Company for about 30 years as plow polisher and steam hammer operator.  He’d been ill for a couple years before his death and had not worked.  He died suddenly from a heart attack while at home at 49 Dunne Avenue.

Myers served on the Collinsville Red Cross Committee, and in 1917 was a leader in securing new members.  In 1920, he was a delegate to the Democratic state convention.  He was survived by his daughter and two brothers, one who lived in Collinsville and the other in California.  His son-in-law was Donald Curry, a minor league baseball player.

Meyers’ funeral was held at St. Patrick’s Church with the Reverend James L. Smith officiating.  The land on which the church was built was donated by Myers’ grandfather.

Peter J. Myers is buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Collinsville.
