This large cistern, sometimes called the “mud turtle” owing to its low profile and shape, was constructed around the turn of the twentieth century and holds 250,000 gallons of water pumped from the Farmington River. It was erected to provide fire protection in the Collins Company complex and part of the village and continues to feed a hydrant and sprinkler system within the factory site. The sprinkler system put out its first fire at the factory in 1909.
