YOUR SILENT NEIGHBORS
Nils O. Lofgren, Shopkeeper and Farmer
by David K. Leff
Town Poet Laureate and Deputy Town Historian

Arriving in Collinsville in September 1872 shortly after immigrating to the United States, Nils O. Lofgren (1844-1910) was born in Anderslof, Sweden where he spent his youth. He was married to Ingri N. Nelson in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Lofgren settled on Huckleberry Hill and was considered “one of the most respected citizens . . . of Collinsville, town of Avon,” according to a newspaper account. For several years he operated a store in the Beehive (where the town hall parking lot is today). Afterward, he farmed “and handled certain remedies for disease.”

Lofgren was a member of the Collinsville Congregational Church and active temperance affairs on a statewide basis. He ensured that a temperance slate was on the ballot in Avon for many years. He was a deputy of the Good Templars Lodge in Collinsville, a fraternal organization working to prevent harm from alcohol and drugs.

Survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters the funeral was held at his home and conducted by Reverend C. E. Coolidge of the Collinsville Congregational Church. He was “a man who had the esteem and respect of all who came in contact with him,” the newspaper wrote.

Nils O. Lofgren is buried in the Village Cemetery, Collinsville.
