4B. UPPER MAIN STREET

Next  Blue Tour List

The upper part of Main Street is dominated by story-and-a-half workers’ duplex cottages built by the Collins Company. They are two cottages built side by each around a center chimney which housed the ovens and fireplaces for living rooms. Bedrooms upstairs are small, under low roofs. Basements alternate beneath the houses. Frequently the bathroom was the last room built and is therefore often situated at the back of the kitchen el. The modest front belies the bulk of the el behind. As these once practically identical houses were often improved by their owners, it is interesting to observe additions to the main house, the entrance porch, and the kitchen el.
